The View From Above
Written by Campbell Edinburgh, The View From Above interrogates some of the ways in which the narrative aesthetics used in contemporary storytelling privilege whiteness and maleness. It looks at how our media is used to other people and perpetuate white supremacy, and searches for other ways of seeing.
I provided intimacy direction to the project, working directly with O’Mahony and Raval. This was an interesting and challenging project, since much of the ‘intimacy’ of the film was achieved through the embodiment of the script in post-dramatic delivery by the actors, that required a less character driven and more personal connection to the text. Some of the my work here involved supporting actors’ requests for script revision, as well as more typical movement direction for a physically intimate scene. I used my training in Overlie’s Six Viewpoints and the Creative Articulations Process to provide a framework for developing a choreography that O’Mahony and Raval felt safe and comfortable with.
The film premiered at Stage@Leeds in November 2023.
